Oreninc Index Rebounds to Modest Levels

The Oreninc Index returned to modest levels for the week ending June 12, 2014. After last week’s dramatic fall, the Index has returned to the relatively optimistic numbers we had seen in previous weeks. Total dollars announced rose to $157.8m, a three-week high. Seven brokered and bought deals were announced for $77.9m, five-week highs. The most impressive statistic of the week was an average deal size of $5.63m, a 14-week high. This continues the ongoing narrative that spring 2014 has had more activity than 2013, and gives us hope of an uptick. The next few weeks will be telling as we head into the summer solstice and the official start of summer.

Oreninc Index Drops to 11-Week Low

The Oreninc Index fell to an 11-week low for the week ending June 5, 2014. Activity was down in all areas for the week; it seems that the previously expected drop has finally arrived. Total dollars announced fell to $83.3m, a six-week low. Brokered dollars announced were down to $14.8m on six deals, an 11-week low; bought dollars announced fell to $4m on one deal, a two-week low. It will be interesting to see if this poor performance sets a trend as we enter summer, or whether it will be a momentary lull in what has been a surprisingly upbeat spring.

Oreninc Index Bounces Back

The Oreninc Index jumped up for the week ending May 29, 2014. Given the Memorial Day holiday in the United States, the increase was somewhat unexpected. Total dollars announced jumped to $162m, a three-week high. Brokered activity was also up to $84.5m on four deals, a three-week high; two bought deals were announced at $77m, a three-week high. Average deal size continued its climb to $4.9m, a 12-week high. It’s good to see some real cash floating around during a time when financings tend to wind down as juniors gear up for their summer programs. This week continues to underscore the theme of Spring 2014: not great, but better than last year.

Oreninc Index Falls in Holiday-Shortened Week

The Oreninc Index stumbled modestly for the week ending May 22, 2014. While it’s never good to see a dip in performance, this was an expected one given the Victoria Day holiday last week and Memorial Day in the States this week. Total dollars announced jumped to $115.2m, a two-week high. Brokered dollars were down to $15m on one deal, a nine-week low. There were no bought deals for the first time in 19 weeks. Expect next week to be at a similarly low level, given the holiday in the States and the unofficial mark of the beginning of summer.

Index Moving Average Climbs for Fourth Week

Despite the weekly state of the market falling, the five-week moving average increased for the fourth straight week, the first time since late February, for the week ending May 15th, 2014. Unfortunately, dollars raised in both brokered and non-brokered offerings was down this week, which will likely be the case over the next two weeks due to Victoria Day (yesterday) and Memorial Day next Monday in the United States.

Oreninc Index Continues Modest Growth

The Oreninc Index continued its slow upward trend for the week ending May 8, 2014. Total dollars announced exploded to $165.2m, an eight-week high. Brokered dollars announced was $90.8m on four deals, a two-week low; bought dollars announced rose to $90m on three deals, a nine-week high. Though not an overwhelming jump, it is still nice to see a positive trend, especially compared to the previous month. That being said, it would be surprising if this type of growth continues into the summer.

Oreninc Index Jumps to Seven-Week High

The Oreninc Index jumped to its highest level in seven weeks for the week ending May 1, 2014. This is the first significant jump the Index has made in any direction in six weeks. Total dollars raised exploded to $131.5m on 30 deals, a four-week high. Brokered and bought deals both jumped up, going to $102.2m and $37.2m, seven- and three-week highs respectively. While only one week, it’s good to see some movement in the financing markets heading into May. That being said, don’t hold your breath on any significant run of increased Index performance, especially as we approach the summer months.

Oreninc Index Update: April 24, 2014

Oreninc Index Flattest in Two Years

The Oreninc Index stayed at its flattest level in over two years for the week ending April 24, 2014. Breaking away from its usual volatility, the Index has stayed at a consistent level for the last five weeks. Total dollars announced fell to $50.1m, a four-week low. Brokered deals also fell, going to three deals for $29m, a four-week low; bought deals were up to $25m on one deal, a two-week high. The Index's level remained unusually steady compared to previous weeks, a trend that will likely return to its more typical fluctuations.

Oreninc Index Stagnates for Fourth Straight Week

The Oreninc Index remained stagnant for the fourth straight week for the week ending April 17, 2014. The five-week moving average fell to its lowest level since Summer 2013. Total dollars announced dropped to $71m, a two-week low. Five brokered deals were announced for $32.1m, also a two-week low; one bought deal was announced for $8m, a four-week low. While it certainly could be worse, the Index remaining at this relatively low level for an extended period of time is concerning. Let’s hope that this does not mean investors -- and with them, juniors’ ability to raise cash -- have started summer hibernation early.
